Garden competition results 2014

We are very grateful to this year’s judge, Julie Parkin from RBGE for giving up her time to assess all of the gardens in the Colonies. Here are the results along with her comments on each winning garden:

The results are firstly Best Garden in each street:

34 Reid Terrace

Interesting planting with different flower shapes and leaf texture. Nice colour scheme, giving a Mediterranean feel and attracting lots of bees. The path edges were softened with low planting.

15 Hugh Miller Place

A bright, cheerful colour scheme in one area and a different tranquil mood around the pond area. Nice mix of evergreens, scented plants and a lovely rose. Lots of bees in the garden.

19 Hugh Miller Place

Lovely clematis seed heads creating a welcoming arch into the garden. Lots of colour and planting at different levels. A nice open light garden.

4 Colville Place

Attractive mixture of flower shapes. Good mix of fruit, vegetables, flowers and good use of containers.

Colville Pl. (High) & Collins Pl. (High)
23 Collins Place

Great use of space in this busy family garden. 4 raised veg beds to allow for crop rotation and a good mix of interesting foliage and flower planting around the edge, at different levels. Colourful window boxes.

3 Collins Place

A very attractive mix of alpines, herbs, flowers and foliage. Well maintained garden.

Balmoral Pl. (Low) & Dunrobin Pl. (high)
16 Dunrobin Place

A good mix of vegetables, herbs and flowers, with lots of variation in height. Very nice hosta display and interesting sculptures.

Dunrobin Pl. (low) & Teviotdale Pl. (high)
3 Dunrobin Place

A loved and well-used garden, with lots of areas of interest. Great use of pots and interesting to see new planting taking shape.

Teviotdale Pl. (Low) & Avondale Pl (High)
8 Teviotdale Place

A well-maintained garden with a lovely mix of flowering plants, pots and hanging baskets. Good disguising of the bin area.

Avondale Pl. (low) & Kemp Pl. (High)
15 Avondale Place

Very attractive views as you first enter garden, colourful and varied planting making good use of the wall space. Well maintained.

Kemp Pl. (low) & Bell Pl. (high)
4 Kemp Place

Very nice mix of flowering shrubs and edible plants. Lovely stone troughs by the door. Bins well-disguised.

Bell Pl (Low) & Glenogle Pl., Ho. & Terr
4 Bell Place

Great use of space. The garden has a very natural feel to it, and it is well-maintained. Interesting mixture of herbs, foliage and flowers giving shaded and sunny areas and an attractive water feature.

The prize for Best Garden overall goes to 4 Bell Place

The prize for Most improved garden goes to 5 Bell Place
A very attractive transformation from the photo, with interesting textures introduced in the landscaping, and unusual features such as the planted tray.
